Counselling Information

What is Counselling

It is a process in which individuals have the opportunity to improve upon their understanding of themselves, including their patterns of thoughts, behaviors, feelings, and the ways in which these may have been problematic in their lives. Counselling also provides individuals with opportunities to examine how to tap into existing resources or develop new ones that make for more effective living and relationships.

How long can I expect to be in therapy

Treatment should be relatively brief and will likely entail 12-18 sessions. For more severe problems, especially chronic or long-term difficulties, it may take longer.

After the first or second initial consultation, and once the assessment of your problems has been made, I will be more able to tell you how long you could be in therapy.

How do I know if I need Counselling

• Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
• Personal issues interfere with sleep, eating habits, concentration, academic performance, and/or relationships with others
• Persistent worry
• Feeling depressed, lethargic, or apathetic
• Thoughts of suicide or wanting to harm yourself
• Increased irritability, inappropriate mood swings, angry outbursts
• Engaging in bizarre, threatening or dangerous behavior, violent or other extremely disruptive behavior (e.g., hostile, threats, assaults)
• Indecisiveness or difficulties making decisions

Is Counselling Confidential

All personal information is treated in the strictest confidence and remains confidential to the counsellor. This is crucial for you to feel able to trust the service, knowing that it is safe to talk openly about what is happening. This strict confidentiality rule would only be broken, in most cases with the client’s consent, should exceptional circumstances arise which give the counsellor good grounds for believing that serious harm may be caused to the client or to others.

Marriage & Couples Counselling

marriage counselling
When should a couple seek marriage counselling?

- When communication between partners often takes on a tone of being negative, or antagonistic to each other.

- When things have become so bad that one partner starts to leave home on a regular basis.

- When marital issues cause one spouse to, lose their self-esteem, or develop various emotional problems.

- Whenever one partner starts to avoid or withdraw from the other or develop a lifestyle that excludes their spouse.

- When either partner is seriously considering having an affair or has been unfaithful. This also includes emotional intimacy.

- Whenever a couple agrees together that they have problems.

- When there is excessive jealousy.

- When partners stay together just for the sake of the children and would otherwise divorce.

The most important thing to know about couple therapy is that I will not take sides and nobody will be seen as "the problem."

When a couple is having difficulties no one is "wrong." Whether the issue is money, jealousy, affairs, sexuality, communication problems, commitment, control, needing space, lack of intimacy, lack of understanding, etc, there are always two perceptions to every story and the two sides need to be heard and understood.

The sessions can be scheduled for both of you at the same time or individually, if there is a particular issue which needs to be dealt with.

We will discover what triggers the problems within the relationship promoting conflict rather than collaboration. Different Cognitive-Behavioural techniques will be used to deal with the type of problems you may present.
